ANKSTMUSIK are proud to announce the DVD release of the concert film FAUST:NOBODY KNOWS IF IT EVER HAPPENED . Following on from successful screenings at the ICA in London and at selected uk film festivals this unique concert movie is now available to buy on DVD .
On Sunday 1st of December 1996 legendary Krautrock pioneers FAUST played an explosive concert at The Garage , London. NOBODY KNOWS IF IT EVER HAPPENED is a record of that extraordinary concert. The film is faithful to the sound, fury and disorientation of their performance as it takes the viewer into the thrilling ‘here and now’ of that packed venue on that winter evening…... The band’s usual instrumentation was augmented on the night by amplified power tools , arc welders , hay threshing machinery and in an evening of action painting , nudity , destruction and creation the band more than lived up to their promise of creating more of a happening than a standard concert. The film features original members Jean Herve Peron, Hans Joachim Irmler and Werner ‘Zappi’ Diermaier with special guests guitarist Steven Wray Lobdell and sculptress Insa Winkler .
This DVD edition includes ‘STRUKTUR’ - an exclusive fifty minute behind the scenes document shot by the late Arthur Howes , also included is a bonus performance of the classic track FLASHBACK CARUSO and specially commissioned liner notes from Andy Wilson author of the recently released FAUST book Stretch Out Time .
‘Nobody Knows ..’ is producer/director Emyr Glyn Williams’ second production for Ankstmusik.
His first cinema film - the Bafta (Wales) winning Y LLEILL ( THE OTHERS) will be appearing on DVD later on in 2007.
WHAT THE PRESS SAY………………………………………
A remarkable performance ,a feat of stamina that proves these Germans could still handle the kind of eclectic scene shifting they achieved on their classic Krautrock albums of the early 70’s . It also proved they could rock and the intensity of sound and spectacle is palpable .They are in their own world, on their own time ,absorbed in their own devilish pact.
THE WIRE.
They no longer live in a commune but judging by this performance they’ve lost none of their instinct for the unusual. It is almost a continuation of their shows from 1973-4 a belated picking up of the baton they so noisily dropped back then, and a resumption of the spirit of Krautrock. Who knows what they’ll be up to in 25 years time ?
MOJO
Since Faust introduced metallic percussion into the rock vocabulary , groups such as Test Dept,Pere Ubu and Ensturzende Neubauten may have popularised the notion further ,but none have approached their task with such obvious art-terrorist gusto. It’s not all noise and industry.Interspersed between the more demanding pieces are a few pristine miniatures.
At the opposite extreme the threshing machine doesn’t disappoint.
I don’t know whether it was art but it was certainly entertaining.
